“He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” Psalm 62:2 (NIV)

The whole place was vibrating. My thoughts quickly faded. The mirrors shook as if they were preparing to leap off the wall. If I lived anywhere else, I'd swear this was an earthquake. But this was North Carolina. We get tornadoes, hurricanes and ice storms, not earthquakes. But just to be sure, I turned on the news and realized that the place I thought would never be shaken by an earthquake, had been.

There is no guarantee that natural disasters will pass us by. We can't be assured that our sand bags, hurricane shutters, reinforced concrete or fire alarms will prevent or lessen the damage to our property or our lives. We can try our hardest, but in the end, we have little, if any control. But there is one area of our life where we are promised safety. God guarantees that He is there for us at all times. David calls God his rock and salvation. A rock is sturdy. It can hold you up or you can hold onto it. It's a place of safety and sometimes salvation. God is David's protector and shield in times of trouble. Because God is these things, David will never be shaken. The one he trusts in and depends on will keep him safe.

Just like we can't control earthquakes, hurricanes or tornadoes, we can't control the storms that enter our lives. But we never have to worry about them. We can pray for strength and courage to endure. When we do that, we stand on the rock. When the floods of fear, anger or discouragement threaten to drown us, our Bibles will fill our hearts with the peace of God's word. Murphy's Law seems to be active and camping out in my life. If the same is happening to you, know we can depend on God to show us how to survive the battles. He'll be right there, protecting and guiding us, if we ask Him. No matter what trials besiege us, we know that God is in control and He can't be shaken.

Don't try to follow your own plan for dealing with life's storms and disasters. Count on God instead. Believe he's with you. Lean on him for strength and protection. If you trust him, you will never be shaken.
